The 40th day A. D.!

Most Filipinos practice after death traditions, like the 40th day memorial.

The belief is that the soul of the departed is still around wandering during the 40-day period, coming back home and visiting the places he/she lived in.  So, if you have goosebumps, feel a cool wind, the lights flicker and sense other hints, Casper has come back and visiting you.  Creepy!

The purpose of the 40th day is to bid good bye to the departed for him/her never to return again but to rest in peace. Thence, those who are left behind should grieve no more and to move on with their lives.

There's also a dispute on the reckoning of the 40th day.  Is it 40 days after death or 40 days after inclusive of the date of death?  For example, if one passed away on August 4, when is the 40th day?  September 13 or 12?

Anyway, based on the latter, we celebrated the 40th day of a dearly departed.  We went to and gathered in his home with his family; so, he would not come to our places for a visit.  Due to the pandemic, only  a few close relatives and friends got together.

As expected, there were still griefs and crying episodes.  When they ebbed, stories were told and exchanged on how good (praises were said) and naughty (laughed out loud) he had been.  And, the best part was the food was aplenty and yummy. Burp!

At the ceremony, the celebrating Pastor requested first everyone to give thanks to the Lord.

On my turn, I thanked Him because my wife and I, who are already in our autumn of life, are still alive and kicking despite having comorbidity.  I added in a whisper, "The sad thing, though, is I'm still alive but being kicked.  He he . . . "

Then, the Pastor delivered and explored his message about rejoicing with God even when everything goes awry.  He cited Habakkuk Chapter 3, verses 17-18:

“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior.”

Definitely, nothing is certain but death and taxes.  Let's enjoy life because if He calls you, you can't answer, "Could You call back later, please"!  That is, if it's your time, it's your time!

Life is really short, so, was the memorial.  But, a plan for another get together has already been drawn.  Moving on and see you soon!

A double celebration

Last June 8 was my 52nd birthday. It's also the 7th wedding anniversary of my nephew, Ryan. I celebrated my birthday with a dinner in our favorite Chinese restaurant - Emerald Restaurant. I invited my closest relatives, my family, my mother, my sister - Elvie, and my nephews and nieces. Of course, the other celebrators, Ryan and his beautiful wife - Pie, were invited too. After my celebration, Ryan and Pie invited us for a night out at the Dungeon Bar in Camelot Hotel to celebrate their anniversary. Wow, it's a double celebration - a night of food, booze, fun and bonding!

The union of TR and Alf

TR is the eldest son of a friend and former boss, Robbie. Alf is TR's girlfriend for six years. And, they invited us to attend and witness their wedding at 2:30 PM yesterday, November 22.
TR & Alf

The sacrament of matrimony was held at 2:30 PM at the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Makati City. The reception followed at the Grand Ballroom of the Mandarin Oriental Manila. Wow! It's a grand celebration.

November 22 is our wedding anniversary. Before receiving the invitation two weeks earlier, however, we had plans of celebrating our anniversary out of town. And, since the invitation was R.S.V.P., we just decided to inform them that we could not attend.

Our congratulations and best wishes to you, Attys. TR and Alf. Congrats too to Robbie and Ming for the new addition to your family. We're very sorry for not attending this momentous event.

Grande Island Resort - a dream becomes a reality

Everytime we go to Subic Freeport Zone, we dream of going to Grande Island Resort. We heard it's a good and nice getaway place but very expensive. Now, the dream became a reality.

A relative from San Diego invited us to join him and his wife - our niece for a belated three-day celebration of his 70th birthday at the island. His guests were not relatives and friends from the Philippines but from United States and Sweden. His other guests from other parts of the globe, for one reason or another, were not able to come.

Last Monday morning, the guests rendezvoused at the ferry terminal adjacent to the SBMA Administration Building Subic for the 30-minute boat ride to the island.

All the 29 guests were housed on chalets with their back verandas facing the bay and the mainland.

Unfortunately, it's raining on our first two days. We had not run out of luck, though, as the weather on our last day was very good. Despite the rainy weather, we really had fun, enjoyed our stay, the food, the drinks, and meeting new friends - foreign and local. The food were great - buffet breakfasts, and lauriat style lunches and dinners. The planned barbecue party on our second night was spoiled by the rains. The drinks were aplenty - red wine, whisky, vodka, tequila, rum, liquer and beer.

We thanked Matt (the celebrator) and his wife - Raquel for this once in a lifetime opportunity. And, nice meeting you - Herbie, Kristel, Rita, Bob, George, Solvig, Bob, Sonia, Vicky and Jun.
