Dr. William Heyward versus the World’s Deadliest Communicable Diseases

Dr. William Heyward had spent almost three decades of his life fighting some of the world’s deadliest communicable diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, Ebola, haemophilus influenzae, hepatitis B, and hepatic cancer. He had made researches on the causes, effects and prevention of these diseases. His works brought him to far-flung places and world’s poorest areas.

When he joined CDC in 1979, he worked with the indigenous populations of Anchorage, Alaska (his first assignment) for almost ten years. He practically eradicated the diseases of Hepatitis B, liver cancer and haemophilus influenzae among Alaskan natives.

In 1988, her rejoined CDC in Atlanta and organized the International AIDS program. He led the epidemiological studies of HIV/AIDS in Brazil, Honduras, Zaire (now Congo), Guinea Bissau, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, and Thailand. Then, he developed CDC field stations for the study of HIV/AIDS in Ivory Coast and Thailand. In the next twelve years, his mission against AIDS would pair him with the World Health Organization in Zaire, Rwanda, Uganda, Thailand, and Brazil. He also assisted investigate the Ebola epidemic in Zaire.

He retired from the CDC in 2000 but was appointed V. P. for International Clinical Research with VaxGen, Inc. Thereat, he worked on trials for an HIV vaccine for Thailand, the U.S., Canada, and Europe. He also assisted the Walter Reed Army Institute for Research in developing plans for a “prime-boost” vaccination strategy with the canary pox vaccine.

After he left VaxGen in January 2004, he became consultant to the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative and the Ministry of Health in Brazil. In April 2004, he formed Quattro Clinical Research (QCR), a Clinical Research Organization consulting with many bio-tech and pharmaceutical companies on infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS and meningococcal vaccines, allergy vaccines, vaginal microbicides for the prevention of HIV infection in women of developing countries, and cancer compounds.

Elite no more

I just received my new Philippine Airlines Mabuhay Miles ID card downgrading my membership from Elite to Base Member effective March 1, 2008.

I have been an Elite Member since 2006. But last year, I did not meet the qualifications to preserve my Mabuhay Miles Elite Membership. World Pyro Olympics 2008 Rescheduled

We were looking forward to watch the first event of the 2008 World Pyro Olympics, which was originally scheduled this coming Saturday, February 16, 2008. However, I just learned about the new schedules (all Saturdays):

April 5 - KOREA (KR) vs CANADA (CA)
April 12 - JAPAN (JP) vs AUSTRALIA (AU)
April 19 - ITALY (IT) vs VENEZUELA (VE)

The venue is at the Bay Area of Mall of Asia, Pasay City, Philippines.

I hope it will not be rescheduled again.

Different kind of pizza

While in Cebu City yesterday, a friend treated me to a different kind of pizza, which according to him can be found only in a pizzeria in this city.

The pizzeria offers different pizza creations. We ordered my friend’s favorite pizza creations: the half round pizza called “Calzone” and the whole round pizza called “Pizza Chavelli” (double faced pizza). Normally, a pizza is an oven baked crust (thick or thin) or pan, round or square shaped, with toppings on it. The pizza creations we ordered, however, have no toppings but fillings. The fillings are basically the same as the toppings used in other popular pizza: tomato, ham, green pepper, button mushroom, pineapple, etc. The sauce used in these pizza is white.

Heavy is this week's PhotoHunt theme. While boarding my plane yesterday morning, I saw the plane and thought of making it my subject for this theme.

Commercial Passengers Airplanes are no doubt very HEAVY. Despite their heft and even with hundreds of passengers and tons of cargoes in them, they can still fly. Thanks to the Wright brothers - Orville and Wilbur.

This is the picture of the Boeing 747-400, which I took from Manila to Cebu City yesterday. The passengers of this plane had HEAVY feelings because our flight was delayed by about one hour and a half. Snacks and drinks were served to these passengers to lighten their feelings.

PhotoHunt 95 : Narrow

Another PhotoHunt day with the theme "NARROW". I had a hard time looking for my subject for this theme. From my photo files, I think this is the most appropriate.

Baguio City is the summer capital of the Philippines and is known as the City of Pines. It is a highly urbanized city, with about 49 square kilometers and an elevation of about 5,000 feet above sea level. It is about 4 to 6 hours away from Manila, depending on the time and day of your travel. There are three main arteries going to and from Baguio City: Kennon Road, Marcos Highway, and Naguilian Road. Of the three, Kennon Road is the NARROWest, the windest, with sharpest curves, the steepest, and the most dangerous due to frequency of landslide.

Despite of Kennon Road's conditions, I still use it on my way up to and down from Baguio City; because it is the shortest, the most exciting and thrilling way, and with less vehicles traversing. Buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles are prohibited from using this road. And, most drivers prefer Marcos Highway.
